Treasure Chamber

In the Treasury of Klosterneuburg Monastery, one can view the monastery’s most precious sacred artworks, ranging over nine centuries.
As well as the work of mediaeval goldsmiths, numerous reliquary monstrances from the Middle Ages and artworks made of ivory, a selection of the large collection
of liturgical vestments dating from the baroqueperiod to modern times are also displayed here. One of Austria‘s most precious baroque monstrances, the Veil Monstrance, which was commissioned to mark the 600th anniversary of the founding of the monastery in 1714, is displayed vis-à-vis the Margravial Vestment, from which the Lower Austrian coat of arms originated, and the “Writing Set” of St Leopold, dating from the 12th century. The Austrian Archducal Hat, the crown of the Archduchy of Austria – which was endowed in 1616 by Maximilian III as the holy archducal crown – is regarded as the absolute highlight of the monastery‘sTreasury.

Annual exhibition 2018

Arrianis Roman Camp – The Limes in Klosterneuburg: The Augustinian monastery at Klosterneuburg is built on the site of the former Roman camp of Arrianis, which was part of the Danubian Limes. For over four hundred years, the northern border of the Roman Empire extended along the Danube here and left behind a wealth of objects in the ground that provide interesting insights into life in a military camp and in civilian settlements.
Guided Tour of the Excavation: daily 11 a.m./12:30 p.m./2:30 p.m./4 p.m. (Attention: complete viewing of the annual exhibition only possible on guided tour.)

Monastery museum

For hundreds of years the monastery has been committed to the task of commissioning and acquiring works of ecclesiastical art. The monastery museum is located in what are known as the Archdukes´ Rooms on the second floor of the Imperial Wing. In no less than 12 halls, a cross-section of the Monastery’s collections
is displayed. The collection of late Gothic panel paintings, in particular, is of more than regional significance. The Gallery of Modern Art was opened in 2013 at Klosterneuburg Monastery. It presents positions in religious art of the 20th and 21st centuries.
